The BBB serving Central California is issuing a red flag regarding text messages from banks to account holders. Last week, there appears to have been an outbreak of text messages to holders of Wachovia Credit (and possibly debit) cards. Wachovia Bank is now Chase in Central California.

The message received reads: wachovia alert - your card starting with 4828 has been deactivated please contact us at 804-715-9368 to reactivate your card

If you receive a text message from your bank or any bank, do not respond to the message. Banks do not send text messages to their account holders about their accounts. If you have a question about your account, call the customer service number provided on your bank statement or online at your bank’s web site.
