BBB reminds businesses to check before supplying company information
The BBB is hearing from businesses that have been approached by individuals claiming to be representatives of PG&E and offering to lower their utility bills.
The people actually represent alternative energy suppliers that may or may not be able to reduce the utility expenses for a business.
Businesses should always ask to see identification when approached by anyone claiming to represent PG&E or any other company.
California law says you can switch from PG&E and choose an alternative provider of natural gas.
In addition, Direct Access Service is an optional service that allows customers to purchase electric supplies and additional energy services from a competitive Energy Service Provider (ESP), rather than from Pacific Gas and Electric Company.
Although customers will purchase their electricity from an ESP under direct access service, Pacific Gas and Electric Company will continue to deliver the electricity through its transmission and distribution systems. It is possible that customers could continue to receive a monthly bill from PG&E.
There is no guarantee that alternative services will cost less than PG&E. It is up to each business owner to evaluate the programs and services offered and make their own determination.
A list of approved alternative energy suppliers can be found at www.pge.com.
